Thousands of Scouts Have Been Victimized By Their Scoutmasters
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has been one of our nation’s largest youth organizations.
In 1979, over 5 million youths were members. Today, youth membership is 2.3 million with close to 900,000 adult volunteers.
Although parents trusted BSA with their children, the organization let many boys down...
Over 8,000 former Scout Leaders have been accused of abusing more than 12,000 children and more are coming forward every day.
Decades of Misconduct and Cover Ups Within Boy Scouts of America
1988: BSA recognizes sexual misconduct is occurring within its organization. In response, it develops a Youth Protection program to educate and prevent abuse.
1991: Washington Times publishes a major five-part series called “Scouts Honor” about sex abuse within BSA. It concludes “The Boy Scouts are a magnet for men who want to have sexual relations with children...Pedophiles join the Scouts for a simple reason: it's where the boys are.”
2010: Jury awards $18.5 million as punishment for a boy who suffered sexual abuse. At the time, that was the largest punitive damages awarded in the U.S. to a single plaintiff for this claim type. See Lewis v. Boy Scouts of America et al.
2012: The “Perversion Files” are released. Court forced BSA to release over 20,000 pages, originally called “ineligible volunteer” files, documenting 1247 cases of alleged child sex abuse within its between from 1965 to 1985.
2012: Charleston Gazette publishes report detailing instances of abuse that continued within BSA. Over one third of the cases mentioned in the documents were not provided to law enforcement.
You are not alone. We are here to help. Time is very limited.
Victims of sexual abuse have rights. The thousands of young men who fell victim to abusers deserve justice for their mental and physical suffering.
The Boy Scouts of America has over $1 billion in assets. However, when the organization declared bankruptcy, it put a time limit for victims to file an abuse claim.
That deadline is fast approaching. And there may never be another opportunity to share your story and file a claim.
